Creating the [Seed] Bank will help through preserving stored genetic material to conserve both rare and important mountain plants on the one hand, and on the other hand be a source to conduct other future research programs. Furthermore, excess quantity of seeds produced during cultivation trials in the Botanic Garden will be stored and available to producers.

In the Seed Bank, the seeds will be collected from:

A. native plants in Greece, rare plants – which although they are not native, they have a limited distribution in Greece – and endangered plants belonging to the flora of Parnassos. Attention will be given to the species Bupleurum capillare, and which is a volunteer in the Apollo – Delphi Botanic Garden and included in the European Union’s directive on priority species for conservation [, known as the Habitats Directive].

B. medicinal, aromatic and insect repellent plants, even from those whose properties have not been scientifically verified yet, since they constitute a reservoir of such research that may produce extraordinary results in the future.

C. edible mountain plants, which could also produce commercially viable strains and products.

D. plants of aesthetic value, which could also be utilized in the future.

And taking just these categories into account, there is one area whose flora meets the vast majority of them:that of Mount Parnassos. Finally, it is worth mentioning that within the context of this activity which originally will be performed on the field out of necessity due to [seed] collection, an extensive study of the mountain flora will be carried out, something that has not taken place up to now. Dr Irene Vallianatou, member of our civic non-profit organization, will have the scientific responsibility for this project.

At the Delphi Botanic Garden, we showcase and protect the unique plant diversity of Parnassos, consisting of aromatic and medicinal herbs and edible plants that are endemic to the region and Greece in order that Delphi will continue to inspire more people not only as a world heritage site, but also as a center of environmental awareness worldwide.
